Description
Rare, signed and personalized with a sketch, this book of editorial cartoons from 2 time Pulitzer Prize winner and Legion of Merit holder Bill Maudlin is sure to appeal to a select audience. The editorial cartoons appearing on the pages of this historical work were authored and selected for inclusion by Maudlin himself and were actually published during the 1961-1965 timeframe in either the Chicago Sun Times or the St. Louis Dispatch, both newspapers for which Bill Maudlin was employed as an editorial cartoonist. The autograph found on the inside cover includes a whimsical sketch by the cartoonist of an everyday fella with a cigarette hanging from his mouth, similiar to the sketched ‘dog faced’ soldiers Maudlin became famous for during his work at the US military’s official newspaper ‘Stars and Stripes’. The autograph/inscription includes Bill’s own handwritten date - ‘10/26/65’, which would be the same year as this hard-to-find book was first published (there are several earlier years noted on the copyright page, these years denote the time of publication of the cartoons contained in the book see above paragraph). Bill Maudlin was not only an editorial cartoonist for SnS, but a combat veteran of the war, wounded while visiting a machine gun nest near Monte Cassino. His satiric cartoons depicting Army life angered then Gen George Patton who threatened to “throw his ass in jail” as his cartoons in SnS were read by soldiers throughout the European theater. Maudlin passed in 2003, and is buried in Arlington. The book is in great shape, with only one small nick on the upper dj border. Same dj shows some age-based yellowing, and there is a barely visible stain on the bottom edge (stain is more pronounced on the inside of the jacket - but noone can see that! Also an ink-like stain on the inside of dj spine). Book itself is in excellent condition. No marks of ownership, clean pages. Inside cover has some pronounced age-based yellowing, but is barely noticeable throughout the rest of the book. Be the next proud owner of this fine piece of Americana, by this accomplished and loved American icon.
