Description
This is an unusual vintage iron figural candle holder from my grandmother's house. It depicts a robed figure that appears to be a monk and resembles images of St Francis. Please see photos. I cannot find a maker's mark or signature, but it appears old. Given my grandmother's collecting habits, it has to predate 1980. It stands approx 12" tall x 5.25" wide. It is handmade, constructed of iron pieces that have been soldered and pinned together. The figure is attached to a central candle holder that has an approx opening diameter of .75". There is also a smaller candle holder on each side of the figure that has independent petal-like pieces that secure a candle. Given this design, it appears that you should be able can fit a small range of candle diameters in these holders. This piece is HEAVY and highly detailed, with an expressive face on the figure and a line, dot and crenelated designed carved base. See photos. The condition of this piece is very good. I can find no damage other than some spots of slight rust on the base. Note, the petals on the smaller holders are not perfect or perfectly symmetrical. I don't know if this is a result of use, or whether this is the original state. One of the petals has a slight cut, which is on the rear side. This appears original and does not seem to affect its integrity. See last photo. I have wiped this piece, but have not deep cleaned it. It still retains some candle remnants and perhaps some wax drops. Please do not hesitate to contact me for more photos or with questions.
